Our History

Gary Thompson Sr., founder of Thompson Industrial Supply, started in the industry as a delivery driver for Mender’s Chain and Gear in 1961. With hard work and dedication, Gary Sr. worked his way up in the company to inside sales and eventually outside sales. In 1965, Gary Sr. found a new opportunity to work for King Bearing. In his time with the company, he quickly realized that the service to the larger customers was much greater than what was provided to the smaller customers.

This sparked the idea to start a new company that would focus on small companies just as much as larger ones. After taking out a second mortgage on his home, Gary Sr. launched the first Thompson Industrial Supply in El Monte, CA in 1969. From the beginning, Thompson Industrial Supply was a family owned and operated company. The first location started with Gary Sr., his wife Melanie, and his brother-in-law Bobby.

In 1980, Gary Sr. started a new division called “Sprocket and Chain Specialist”. He stocked over one million dollars of sprockets and chain on the shelves to make sure he had what customers needed, when they needed it. With business growing, in 1983, he then launched an in-house machine shop for custom fabrication of parts to better service customers.

After 16 years of building up the Thompson Industrial Supply reputation for great products and service, Gary Sr. opened a second location in Rancho Cucamonga, CA in 1985. This would allow the expansion into new and developing areas in the Inland Empire. During expansion, Gary Sr. did not want to lose his original intent when founding the company. He stressed to all his employees the importance of service to all customers, large and small.

Today, after 52 years since its founding, Thompson Industrial Supply has serviced thousands of customers of all sizes in various industries. The company continues to grow to help provide solutions and top service to all customers. The Rancho Cucamonga store now operates the expanded in-house fabrications that

includes three mills, four lathes, one key seater machine, a Cincinnati laser, press brakes, robotic welders, as well as a gearbox modification shop to build gearboxes. Thompson Industrial Supply is still family owned to this day. Now at two and three generations down, the company is operated by Gary Thomson Jr., and his two sons, Garlin and Trevor. Here at Thompson Industrial, we have an inside and outside sales team with hundreds of years’ experience combined. Whether you need a machine designed or a part identified we have you covered. We can engineer or troubleshoot any problem whether it's mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or automation.

Our outside sales team will come to any location in Southern California to help you with your needs free of charge. We also have a full machine shop with mills, lathes, laser jet, press brake, and a robot welder which allows us to make, modify or fix any part you need. We have a team of drivers that deliver locally free of charge or we can ups, FedEx or DHL anywhere in the world.
